The Hanohno Ocean Challenge took place on January 31, 2009. Werner athlete, Tony Mueller blogs here about his race...
Wow, what a Race. 400 paddlers, 280 in the 4.8 mile short course, we had a 3 line start because of so many paddlers: 1st Line -- OC 1 and 2, and 2nd line – Surfskiesand, 3rd line -- Prone boarders with a beach start.
John Becker, Nathan Short and myself got into a battle; we stayed even from ½ to ¾ way through the race, it looked like it was going to be this way to the end. Then, I slowed my stroke rate and relaxed on the recovery, putting more power into my stroke and began to pull away – I took 6th place -- no way was I going to catch the big guns like Danny Ching or Rob Roias -- too strong and too young. STANDUP PADDLE BOARDING HAS ARRIVED!
